This year, we will be celebrating the 5th year of the Let’s Move – McAllen Kids Marathon. The success of this event is attributed to the collaboration of several public and private entities that are committed to teaching healthy living habits to the children of the Rio Grande Valley.
During the 2014-15 school year, McAllen ISD was recognized as the first school district in the nation where all schools earned the Let’s Move-Active Schools award recognition. During the same year, the City of McAllen earned 4 out of 5 medals in the Let’s Move-Cities category. The idea of a Let’s Move! McAllen Pep Rally evolved to celebrate accomplishments. Perfect timing – the McAllen Kids Marathon was created to help generate interest in the event. Needless to say, the past years of the event have been very successful.
2014-15 – Anthony Robles – 2011 NCAA Wrestling Champ; ESPY Winner
2015-16 – Ylianna Guerra – 2015 Miss Texas USA/Miss USA Runner-Up
2016-17 – Keith Davis – NFL (NY Giants) – Special Guest (Clarence Lee)
2017-18 – Keith Davis – NFL (NY Giants) – Special Guest (Caylin Moore)
2018-19 – German Madrazo – Olympian
The challenge is for children to run the equivalent of a marathon — 26.2 miles — over a period from August to January to get into the habit of daily exercise. The McAllen Kids Marathon kicks off with a pep rally in September at the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium (by McAllen High School) in which students K- 8th grade gather as a community and run their first mile together.
Participants log miles they run or walk on an honor system until the community gathers again on January 19th (to run their final mile) on the day before the annual McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Memorial Run. Each student will receive an incentive for completing the McAllen Kids Marathon.
It’s all free to students.
