The McAllen Kids Marathon is a collaboration of several public and private entities that are committed to teaching healthy living habits to the children of the Rio Grande Valley.
The challenge is for children to run the equivalent of a marathon — 26.2 miles — over a four-month period to get into the habit of daily exercise. The McAllen Kids Marathon kicks off with a pep rally on Sept. 9, 2017, at the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium (at McAllen High School) in which students K- 8th grade gather as a community and run their first mile together.
During the next 19 weeks, students log additional miles they run or walk on an honor system until the community gathers again on Jan. 20, 2018 — the day before the annual McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Memorial Run — to run their final mile together. Each student will receive a finisher’s medal commemorating their achievement.
It’s all free to students.
