The McAllen Kids Marathon is a collaboration of several public and private entities that are committed to teaching healthy living habits to the children of the Rio Grande Valley.
The challenge is for children to run the equivalent of a marathon — 26.2 miles — over a four-month period to get into the habit of daily exercise. The McAllen Kids Marathon kicks off with a Let’s Move! pep rally in which students in kindergarten through the 8th grade gather as a community and run the first miles together.
In the intervening four months, the students log the miles they run on an honor system until the community gathers again on the eve of the annual McAllen Marathon to run the final mile together. Each student will receive a medal commemorating the achievement.
It’s all free to students.
